Orienting and Training Volunteers

Orientation introduces the volunteer to your organization, the organization’s mission and its key program. An orientation helps the volunteer to see how the work that is being performed relates organizational goals and objectives and prepares the person to take his or her place in your agency.

Training prepares the volunteer for the job. The nature of the work dictates the level of training and often helps to determine the best ways to impart information. Training can occur in formal classroom settings, though on-the-job assistance, via the internet or with the assistance of a more experienced volunteer or staff member.
