Anti-Volunteerism

«Back

Not everyone thinks volunteering is such a great thing. In fact, there are those, on both sides of the political spectrum, who argue against support for volunteering, and against the idea of promoting volunteerism as a positive thing people should explore and pursue.

We think it's important that volunteer managers educate themselves about these arguments against volunteering, so they will know how to address these points if they are brought up at board meetings, meetings with potentail supporters, etc. Some of the concerns that lead to these points of view are quite legitimate, and volunteer managers should be prepared to address them:

Philadelphia National People's Campaign
Papers regarding the 1997 Presidential summit on volunteerism in Philadelphia (among others).

The Ayn Rand Institute
Papers regarding the 1997 Presidential summit on volunteerism in Philadelphia (among others).
